Frequently Asked Questions About Pinup & Boudoir Sessions
Below are some of the questions we often receive about Pinup and Boudoir sessions. If you have any further concerns that aren't listed below, feel free to give me a call or email and I'd be happy to address those for you.
Are you a professional photographer? What are your qualifications?
Yes, I have a Photography Certificate from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and I am also a member of local and international photography groups. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities from the University of Calgary as well as a a Web Design Certificate.
Are your makeup artists and hair stylists professionals?
Yes. I always look for local, certified makeup artists and hair stylists.
I'm not a model - How will I know what to do?
First of all, Don’t Stress! I will walk you through every step of the session. Most importantly it helps to just relax and be yourself. I'll give you guidance and tips, show you different expressions, poses, and sometimes I will literally move your hand, leg, or foot exactly where I want it. Of course this makes people laugh, and there we go - another great shot!
Do I have to have a consultation?
Yes. Even if it's just over the phone. A consultation gives us the chance to discuss and plan exactly what you want. This 15 or 20 minute chat will save us a lot of time the day of your session. As many of the themes involve props or a background, I need to know what to have set up or on hand for your shoot. We’ll talk about your outfit, hair, makeup, props, poses and what type of photofinishing you would like in the end; prints, album, canvas. etc.
What is the difference between Pinup and Boudoir?
Pinup photography is fun, flirty, light-hearted and colourful. Pinup photos tell a story and usually include props of some sort. Clients are in a costume or vintage/retro style clothing.
Boudoir images are more sensual, and I use a different style of makeup and lighting. I like to do Boudoir photography with lots of natural light and keep the mood light and cheerful. I do not do nude photography.
What is included in my package?
Packages always include professional makeup and hair, props, access to costumes, and a set number of retouched digital images. Snacks, chocolate and beverages are always available.
Can I order extra prints or a CD of my images?
Yes. A price list for prints, albums, books, posters, canvases, calendars and other photofinishing products is included in your welcome package which you receive at your consultation.
Are the woman featured on your website models?
No! They are not models! Women come in all beautiful shapes and sizes. The Before & After Gallery showcases the difference having professional hair and makeup can make.
What kind of costumes do you provide?
I have too many to list here, but basically I have something for everyone. Seasonal costumes include: sexy Santa costumes, witch dresses, Octoberfest outfits, Irish hats, corsets, a variety of dresses, blouses, skirts and shoes. I also sell corsets ($40 - $120). Corsets are perfect for slimming down 1-2 sizes in the two minutes it takes to put it on. I started selling these as an additional "Confidence Booster". Almost ALL women feel great, and look fantastic when they put them on. See my STORE page to see corsets.
What sort of props do you have?
I have everything from feather boas to iron horse shoes. If there is something specific you would like to include in your photos, let me know in the consultation. If I need to purchase an item specifically for your shoot, that cost may be added to your package.
I'm a plus size woman. Do you have a wardrobe for my size?
Most of our items are for size 6 - 16, but we pin and place fabrics in all the right places. I have worked with clients size 0 - 24 and all of them stunning and thrilled with the results. (See TESTIMONIALS page)
Do you retouch or Photoshop all the photos?
Shortly after your shoot I select and retouch a few of my favourite images and email them to you right away as “Teasers”. In 7 - 10 days your proofs will be posted in a secure online gallery. I will send you the password and details to review them. You make your selections and then place your order. All images ordered will be retouched and perfect for print.
Am I too old to be a Pinup?
No! It's all about how you feel and how we can make you feel. I recently photographed a sweet lady for her 70th birthday! Once you have your hair and makeup done and are wearing a nice outfit you'll feel like a million bucks! I can do a lot, or a little retouching in Photoshop. It's up to you. Being a Pinup is a great way to spice things up! A calendar or small album makes a great gift for your partners birthday, a Christmas gift or anniversary present.
What do I bring to my session?
We’ll discuss this at the consultation, but in the meantime, visit the CHECKLIST link.
How do I pay?
We accept cash, cheque and email transfers.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to hold your date. I use this to secure the makeup artist and hairstylist. We are then booking that date off for you.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to reschedule your date the deposit can be transferred if we have enough notice. See below:
- 10 + days
If you reschedule or postpone your shoot ten (10) days or more prior to the planned session date, your deposit will be transferred to the new session date
- 4 to 9 days
If you reschedule or postpone between four (4) and (9) days of the planned session date, 50% (half) of the 50% deposit will be forfeited. This is to compensate the stylists and myself for holding the date for you. The remaining 50% will be transferred to your new date.
- 0 to 3 days
If you cancel within 72 hours of the shoot your deposit will be forfeited. (Sorry! but booking locations, stylists and makeup artists all require a deposit from Astoria Photography.)
What makes you different from other photographers?
I naturally put people at ease and simply love what I do which shows in the photos. I believe one of my best traits is being organized, quick with correspondence either by phone or email, AND I’m creative. All of my assistants and stylists are certified professionals, and we've had numerous compliments on how we make you relax and actually enjoy your day! See more comments on our style and personalities on the TESTIMONIALS page.
How many photoshoots have you done?
To date (April 2017) I've photographed close to 250 clients for Pinup and/or Boudoir sessions, numerous portrait sessions, weddings, events, hundreds of cats (for the MEOW Foundation - Calgary), and about 25 pet portrait sessions. See Pet Photography Website
Are you willing to travel?
All travel is always negotiable. For sessions in and around Nanaimo, travel is included.
How quickly will I receive my Proofs?
Quick. Within a day or two I send an email with the teasers. Within 7 to 10 days your images will be posted online where you can view your proofs and/or order prints, cards, albums etc..
How quickly will I receive my Prints?
Within 4 - 6 weeks from the day you ordered them. RUSH orders will be charged an additional 25%. There are always extra costs added for shorter turnaround and delivery, thus the increase in price.
Do you photograph Pets or Weddings?
Yes! I LOVE animals and Weddings! I have a substantial Pet portfolio. Visit my Pet Website Here.
Do you have any references?
Yes. References will be given upon request however, most clients can get a feel of what I’m like from the TESTIMONIALS page.
